Pipes

The latest Innovate UK grant supported project is to investigate a new and innovative method of joining Polyethylene (PE) pipes, an area that has not seen much innovation in the past twenty-five years.

Working closely with the WRc (Water Research Centre) and TWI (The Welding Institute), new abilities permitted by the adoption of the Pinweld plastic welding technology align closely with the recommendations of the UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) report published in 2016 on Achieving Zero Leakage by 2050.

The Solution - A brand new process that will enable a joint to be welded while simultaneously testing the results against known parameters. The process will aim to avoid possible failures, offering manufacturer’s a self-test of pipe welds in a right-first-time or a truly ‘fit and forget’ package. It will also be autonomous, portable, easy to deploy and operate, and inherently safe to use due to its ultra-low energy usage.

The Pinweld technology offers a novel approach to joining plastic pipes, and from the perspective of experts within the utilities-industry, it has the potential to challenge and change the status quo currently resulting in a significant number of new joints leaking. The Pinweld technology will deliver leak free joints, with no heating or cooling cycles, in a highly compact solution for both new networks and repairs.

Manufacturing

Due to the novel way the Pinweld technology works which essentially joins the component parts by replicating the original moulding conditions on a microscopic scale along a joint, it is ideally positioned to be the first linear welding technique for large plastic structures including those made from recycled and bio-derived polymers.

Automotive

Approximately 700,000 bumpers are being replaced in the UK each year, many with only minor damage. The focussed challenge we are addressing is that currently it is virtually impossible to repair cracks in most plastics without damaging them further due to excessive heat required in existing repair processes.
